You'll often see "compatible" TN-360 cartridges not made by Brother. These seem attractive at first as they cost less than genuine ones, but they come with a number of potentially costly pitfalls.

First, the toner used in these third-party products are lower-quality and often contain uneven clumps that cause streaks and faded sections when printing, not the mention the risk of damaging the printer itself. Their capacity will also be lower than genuine OEM's and fail to deliver the promised 2600 pages.

Finally, the cartridges themselves are poorly-built using low-quality materials and don't really "fit right", running a very real risk of mechanically damaging the printer (and ruining your carpet while you're at it). Still tempted by the fake "compatibles"? Read these "horror reviews" by Amazon.com verified purchasers.

If the quality of these fakes wasn't enough, many unscrupulous retailers also advertise an OEM then ship you a compatible after you order and pay for it. Obviously such merchants are also unlikely to give you a refund or an exchange.

Tip: Amazon can change the price of an item while it's in your cart. This is actually a good way to monitor prices as you get notified of price changes each time you view your cart.

Overview

The Brother TN360 black toner cartridge promises (and delivers) 2600 pages at 5% coverage (more than that if you trick your printer's toner-capacity sensor, explained below). It's much better value than the standard TN330 - so much of the cost comes from materials, production and shipping that it's only logical that you're going to pay less on a cost-per-sheet basis with a higher-capacity version.

That's not the only benefit though - you're also doing the environment a favor by reducing plastic waste (since you're going to be replacing your toner less often). While extensive recycling programs (often promoted by printer manufacturers themselves) are already in place, the process of re-filling, re-packaging and re-shipping still contribute to environmental pollution. Either way, high-yield toner is the way to go.

It is possible to print more pages than the stated toner yield with a simple trick (disclaimer: the owner and publisher of this site is not responsible for any damages resulting from following the this advice). When you get the empty toner light from your printer, simply cover the sensor hole/window on the side of the toner cartridge with opaque tape and you will be able to keep printing. When it actually gets close to becoming empty you will start to see fading in your printouts (note: there are reports that if you completely bottom-out, the drum will get damaged - you have been warned).
